"Grab bars are mounted with the top of the gripping surface 33–36 in above the finished floor (AFF), so continuous 2x wood blocking or 3/4-in plywood backing should span that band on the rear and side walls at the water closet and in the tub/shower. The anchorage — bar, fastener, and backing together — must resist a 250 lbf point load in any direction per ICC/ANSI A117.1 §604.9 and the ADA Standards §609.8. Always confirm the exact band against the stamped drawings."

"Do Fair Housing (Type B) units need grab bar blocking even without grab bars?"

Accepted Answer

"Yes. The Fair Housing Act design requirements and ICC/ANSI A117.1 require that bathroom walls at the water closet and tub/shower in covered dwelling units be reinforced so grab bars can be added later, even when no bars are installed at turnover. That means the blocking still has to go in before drywall closes. Type A (fully accessible) units require the grab bars and their backing to be installed."

"Blocking, backing, and fixture carriers are concealed inside the wall cavity.
